Earlier today I was quite depressed with the Bible offerings at the new iPhone Application Store - but now no longer! I found this awesome Bible application created by youversion.com. Features include:

1. 12 English versions of the Bible
2. 3 Spanish versions of the Bible
3. Daily passages to read (read today’s, yesterday’s, skip ahead - anything!)
4. Full text search
5. Fantastic reading interface - cleanest and simplest I’ve seen so far
6. Even has a nice looking icon!
7. Best of all: it’s free

I’m way excited about this new app. This is exactly what I’d started building months ago - but is far more than I could ever have accomplished alone. To start with - the versions! 12 versions! These are the nice copyrighted versions too - not just the free public domain ones - and they’re still offering the app for free. And beyond the app, you can check out the community at http://www.youversion.com/, read the Bible online there, and more.

There’s a whole social community surrounding the Bible at YouVersion.com. Their online Bible reader lets you tag and journal passages as you read them, and also discover what other’s have said and studied about that very same passage. The site has apparently been alive for quite some time, but just this week they released their iPhone Bible reader. Truly amazing.

This was my huge beef with the vast majority of other Bible apps - they cost money! I’m thoroughly convinced that the Bible - the Holy Word of God - should never cost money in any form - digital or otherwise. The only other free Bible was from Agape Fellowship, and is only available in Chinese (English versions coming soon). The other 9 options ranged from $2.99 to $29.99.
